سارة: مظبوط انك كنت مدير بالبنك ؟
نبيل: صحيح, مدير فرع.
سارة: طيَب شو صار ؟

Estez: Lebanese title of courtesy, often given to school teachers and employees with managerial positions.

Beige and Cotton Candy
Sarah: Mom, need anything? I’m leaving to College, Estez Nabil is waiting downstairs.
Mother: Take care, ask him to drive safely, god help this man, he’s been through a lot.
Sarah (smiles): Mom, what’s the story with Estez Nabil, he’s the only cab driver with a title that I know of.
Mother: He’s always been Estez Nabil, since the days when he was a manager at the Intra Bank.
Sarah: The WHAT Bank?
Mother : The Intra bank, it used to be one of the biggest banks, before it went bankrupt during the sixties, leaving behind a pile of troubled people , among which was Estez Nabil, look at him now, he painted that car pink and turned himself into a cabbie.
Sarah: So Estez Nabil was a bank manager??! … I’m leaving.
(In the car)
Sarah: Good morning Estez Nabil.
Nabil: Good morning Princess, how’s the studies?
Sarah: All is well … (in a curious tone) Estez Nabil, can I ask you a question?
Nabil: Sure.
Sarah: Were you really a bank manager?
Nabil: Indeed, I used to be a branch manager at the bank.
Sarah: And what happened?
Nabil: A disaster my child, feuds among nations, ruined people’s lives and got us thrown out on the street. All I had left was my daughter Noor… And this car, my dear business associate! It used to be something! When everyone abandoned us, this hunk of metal remained loyal!! And Noor, God bless her, she’s an angel, and she used to get so happy seeing me in the evening with a bag of cotton candy in my hand, her beloved cotton candy. See this car? It used to be beige back in the day… beige, hehh, what a dull and gloomy color. One Sunday, we got some pink paint and started painting the car; it is better this way, joyful and perky.
Sarah (shocked): And then? Didn’t things get better? Didn’t you find a new job?
Nabil : To tell you the truth, I stopped looking , I’m happier this way, it’s true that traffic is nerve wrecking, but taxi clients are better than the ones at the bank, young and old, local and foreigners… and I’m still working in the services sector no ? (Laughs) Never let life beat you child, keep your chin up, tomorrow’s definitely brighter.
Sarah (paying)
Nabil: It’s on the house child, Godspeed.
